"Studying my options"

We have already received several student applications for the 2025 Batemans Bay Youth Foundation (BBYF) grants to help them commence their tertiary studies. While the majority of students leaving school apply for a grant to start University, several this year have applied to study at TAFE or other tertiary colleges.

For 2024 eight students were awarded tertiary grants from the foundation in January 2024. Students have again lived up to expectations of BBYF and in Semester One achieved: 33 per cent High Distinctions, 33 per cent Distinctions, 22 per cent Credits and eleven per cent Passes.

Students have again used their $3500 grant to help fund the cost of establishing themselves at the institution of their choice. Most have paid accommodation fees, textbook (Yes, they are still being used), relocation costs and equipment required for their studies. Students received $3000 at the grant’s presentation function held at the Batemans Bay Soldiers Club in January. The final $500 was paid in July, after the successful conclusion of the first semester.

The Foundation will allow grants for any recognised Australian tertiary institution, but most students commence their study at Australian National University, Universities of Canberra, and Sydney.  Hamish Buck has been studying Prosthetics and Orthotics at the Southern Cross University on the Sunshine Coast.

For the graduating student this year, applications opened in September following a round of visits to our schools by the BBYF committee promoting BBYF. The closing date is Saturday, November 30 2024. We have been in contact with Batemans Bay and Moruya High Schools, St Peters and Carroll College. Students have been emailed details about the grants and how to apply. Coordinators and career teachers have also been briefed. To date, two students have applied for a 2025 grant having completed their HSC in 2023 and taking a working gap year in 2024.

We are delighted that one of our past students Jake Cartwright has agreed to join the BBYF committee. Jake has set up his solicitor practice in Batemans Bay and it will be energising for the committee to have the input of a BBYF alumni to refresh our thinking and future plans.

The foundation congratulates all our current Year 12 students who are completing the HSC wish them every success for their future.

David Ashford - Chairman

The BBYF was established in 1994 for the purpose of providing financial assistance to students leaving high school to pursue personal development and advancement in an unlimited range of worthwhile fields of endeavour.

It is supported by a partnership between Batemans Bay Rotary, RSL and Soldiers Club.Since 1994 the Foundation has given Grants to 250 students, worth a total value of $780,000. Every cent was locally raised, privately donated, or as part of a bequest.

The BBYF selection panel had the daunting task of determining the 11 grantees from a field of 26 applicants. This was completed through December with interviews held in January. For those receiving a grant, it is a vote of confidence by the Batemans Bay community. The foundation wishes all applicants every success for the future.

Examples included:

  • a student who has a passion for photography who over summer has been protecting swimmers by providing drone patrols on our beaches
  • two students who are well on their way to completing their trades through the school-based apprenticeship program
  • three students who are pursuing careers in nursing.

All students were very excited about this major step in their lives.
